The Softball season in High School is a very short one. The regular season usually starts the first week in April and ends in late May, with the State Tournament beginning the day after Memorial Day and culminates with the State Championships in early June. During that time, teams, most of them, play a 20 game schedule and then participate in their conference tournament. But as we well know, Spring brings rain and after the winter we had in Conn. , made it even a tougher start for Softball. Postponements aplenty happened this season, making it difficult for the Conference Tournaments to be held. Generally, the rule is: when there is a postponed game, the makeup game is supposed to be played on the next available day. But many times this doesn't happen. Games are pushed back so far sometimes, they can interfere with the conference tournaments. I also think that when a game is cancelled, instead of going to the next week, Saturday should be used as a makeup day. Scheduling softball is a tough thing to do, but when putting the master conference scheule together, I would make sure there is at least a full week to get the Conference Tournament in. The FCIAC seems to have gotten it right. The Tournament starts on a Monday so coaches, make sure your games are completed before then. If coaches have to move a game to another field, so be it, especially if your field is constantly unplayable. Listen I love the Conference Tournaments, but enough time has to be given to get them in. So AD's, tell your coaches get the regular season in, ON TIME, to prepare for the Conference Tournaments. Because, remember, the State Tournament will start, no matter what!
