It's Christmastime(oops Holiday time)
Well, here we are again, the Holidays, Christmas and New Year's, the hockey and basketball seasons underway and holiday tournaments aplenty. There are many basketball tournaments, both girls and boys, and many of the area hockey teams go out of state to play games, several going to Maine. Things really don't settle down to a normal pattern until after the holidays. But it makes for great games anyway. The start to the 2 seasons has been great and the broadcasts have begun. A busy week in the week of Christmas, but even the high school sports world knows enough to take off Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. But the broadcasts will continue even during the week between the holidays. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

George DeMaio Jr., better known to sports fans throughout the state as "The Coach", was born and raised in West Haven, CT. Coach attended West Haven High School, where he lettered in basketball and baseball. For his contribution to West Haven athletics, Coach was named Athlete of the Year in 1966. Coach proceeded on to Southern Connecticut State University where he helped found the University radio station.He graduated from SCSU in 1970 and received his Masters Degree in 1977 from Southern as well. From 1970 to 1974, DeMaio taught fifth grade at Thompson School in West Haven. In 1983, while working for Southern New England Telephone, DeMaio was hired by KC101/WAVZ as their Sports Director.It was here that DeMaio started his immense coverage of high school girls and boys athletics. "The Coach" has received numerous honors for his coverage of high school sports. Among them, honorary inductions into the Connecticut Scholastic and Collegiate Softball Hall of Fame in 1995, and The Connecticut Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. He was named Assistant Coach of the Year by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association for his work at North Haven and also received New Haven's Tap Off Club's Distinguished Service Award.Presently on News/Talk 960 WELI and ESPN Radio 1300, "The Coach" continues to give high school girls and boys the coverage he feels they deserve. He has orchestrated state-wide Friday night coverage of high school football in the fall on WELI for the past several years, including a radio record of all 68 scores of high school games on Thanksgiving Eve and Thanksgiving Day in 2008. The Coach hosts Saturday high school football games, on ESPN Radio 1300, as well. Since 1997 he has covered basketball and hockey on ESPN Radio 1300. Of course, 960WELI gets daily coverage of high school athletics by "The Coach" throughout the school year. "The Coach" was involved in East Haven Biddy Basketball from 1979 to 1999. He has been a Little League and softball umpire. He was involved in Team Connecticut Girls AAU basketball from 1994 to 2001, coaching two teams to the National Tournament. He coached North Haven High School Girls Basketball as an assistant to his son Jeffrey for 10 years.
He retired as an 8th Grade Social Studies teacher at East Haven Middle School in December 2008, "The Coach" resides in North Branford with his wife Brenda. He has 2 sons, Matthew and his wife Debbie and their daughter Rebecca living in Old Saybrook, and Jeffrey, who lives in Wallingford with his wife Cory and sons Samuel and Nathan. The Coach received the Gold Bat Award from the West Haven Twilight League in 2005
On September 27, 2007, "The Coach" was inducted into the New Haven Gridiron Club's Hall of Fame. In March of 2008, he was honored by the Connecticut Association of Athletic Directors with the Distinguished Service Award - Outside the Field of Athletic Administration.On March 13,2009, the Coach will receive the Alumni Appreciation Award from SCSU and on March 29th, he received the Chapter Merit Award from the Gene Casey/New Haven Chapter National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.

One Season Ends, Another Begins
The Football season has ended. The Championships were simply great at UCONN. It didn't matter what the final score of the game was, the atmosphere of the entire weeekend was simply terrific. I tell you what,after broadcasting from the UCONN Press Box, it will be difficult to go back to the High School Press Box, but I imagine once I get there, it will be like old times.
So now, 2 new seasons are underway - basketball and hockey, from the warm gyms to the frigid rinks. But it's exciting, because it's high school sports.

My Favorite Week Coming Up
My favorite week of the year is coming up, the week of Thanksgiving. I don't know, it's always been that way, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. High School football
in the morning, getting all the scores and the playoff matchups, getting home to my family, having great food and watching more football. For many years, Thanksgiving was spent at my mom's after ther game. She would make all my favorites, creamed carrots, a pork roast from the sauce and to top it off, chocolate cream pie. My mom is gone now so the family gathers at my house. My wife has taken over and done a spectacular job. I still get the creamed carrots and my son makes the pie. It is a great day. But it all starts with High School football. I get pumped up starting on Monday and it carries on through the week. For many of the teams, it is their final week of practice, getting ready to play their arch rival, making the whole season right.For 32 of the teams, their season will continue to the 2nd season, the Playoffs. This year, the playoffs have been expanded, the season another week. Four classes, 4 champions all scheduled at UCONN on Dec. 10 and 11. Let's hope the weather cooperates. One group of people who are not happy about this, the Winter coaches.

A Good Start
A Good Start
2 Weeks into the football season and 74 scores have been reported thus far. I just don't understand why coaches or AD's can't call their scores in after the game, it takes about 10 seconds. I really can't blame the area AD's, it's the out of area conferences.I mean don't they want to hear their schools score on the air? What I really hate is when I call the school to ask them to report the score and they don't. Nonethelless, a big game in Week 3 #1 Xavier at # 5 Cheshire. It should be a great game with a capacity crowd. At least we'll know that score - but I want more!

The Football Season is Underway
The games have begun. The high school football season got underway with some great games in the first week. It is a great time of the year now with football beginning, the baseball playoffs about to begin, college football in high gear and can you believe in just a few weeks, the NHL will begin, although hockey really takes a back seat to all the sports for some time.
Our first week on WELI doing football was a huge success. We reported 36 final scores on a week that unfortunately had bad weather. I think this will be one
of our greatest years covering not only football but all the high school sports. I am pumped up!

Let The Games Begin
Let the Games Begin
It's almost September but the football practices have begun and the scrimmages are about to begin. It's a great feeling. I need to go to a scrimmage to get my mindset, get pumped up for the season. All you need is to go to 1 and then you're ready. You want to go to another one and then you look at schedules and get ready for opening day. The first broadcast is scheduled for Thursday, September 16 and we'll follow it up with another game on Friday, September 17. An expanded schedule this year with 20 games, including all 4 championship games. Yea, I'm pumped up.

Ready For The Fall
Ready for the Fall
Okay, I've been on vacation, ate my lobsters in Maine, and have returned to now get ready for High School Football. Teams that did not have Spring practice are already
underway while the teans that did practice in the Spring will start on August 25. This
wiill be an exciting year in high school football with the new playoff format and the extension of the season until Dec. 11. I guess the winter sport coaches are not happy about the new format, but I think it's worth a try. The season begins the week of September 13 with our first broadcast on Thursday, September 16. I'm ready.

The Summer - Almost over- but some things unfinished
The summer is almost over. It's sad to see it get dark earlier and earlier. But there is
some unfinished business. First, congrats to the Branford Legion team for winning the Legion Regional Championship in Middletown and advancing to the American Legion World Series in Spokane, Washington. When you have pitching, it makes things a whole lot easier. The Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn., the Junior Softball World Series in Kirkland, Washington and the Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament in New Haven all have to be played. The NFL preseason is underway, but it's tough to watch, the regulars play a series or 2 and they're done - but it does give you a little tease of what's ahead.
