INDIANAPOLIS -- Guard J.R. Smith is set to become a free agent this offseason but said he hopes to return to the New York Knicks.

"I want to retire a Knick," Smith said when asked about his future following the team's season-ending loss to the Pacers on Saturday night. "I don't want to go anywhere else. I love it. I love my teammates. I love my coaches. I was sitting in the locker room looking at my jersey after the game just knowing I don't want to be anywhere else except for in the orange and blue. So we'll see."

Smith has a $2.9 million player option for next year and is expected to opt out and test free agency. The Knicks likely will make it a priority to re-sign Smith, who won the NBA's Sixth Man Award but struggled in the postseason.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady leads off Peter King's "Monday Morning Quarterback" piece on SI.com, with King speaking to Brady about his offseason and also his charity of choice, Best Buddies.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Closer Andrew Bailey is likely to be activated from the disabled list in time for Monday's game in Chicago after making a rehab appearance at Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday night. 

Bailey, who has been on the disabled list since April 29 with a strained right biceps, was scheduled to join the Red Sox in Minneapolis on Sunday, manager John Farrell said. He threw 17 pitches in an inning of work at Pawtucket on Saturday night, and Farrell said "physically, he came through it fine. 

"He showed consistent velocity," Farrell said. "He'll get checked up on it, as anybody would, in a situation like this, but he came out of last night fine."

INDIANAPOLIS -- Carmelo Anthony sat shirtless at his locker, all alone with his thoughts, an ice bag strapped to his bum left shoulder and a pair of ice compression wraps working his barking knees. He wore blue and orange team slippers, with a white towel stretched out beneath his feet, as he gently rocked his legs and lost himself in a vacant stare.

Teammates were quietly dressing around him, some whispering answers to news media questions they didn't want to field, and Anthony just wouldn't get out of that chair to take the last shower of the season. He creaked and grunted when he finally and slowly lifted himself to his feet, and then he unwrapped the shoulder mummy-style, letting that ice bag fall harmlessly to the floor.

The New York Knicks were participating in their last rites of spring, and their franchise player wanted to take this game into overtime. He stopped for a word with Amar'e Stoudemire, the complementary star who wasn't, and tapped Stoudemire on the side. Anthony fiddled with a cellphone he was charging near his stall, and then he staggered off with the limp of a 40-year-old quarterback who had taken one too many hits from the blind side.

In addition to a fourth surgery on his broken forearm, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski might need back surgery, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Gronkowski recently underwent an MRI on his back to check on a disk issue from last season according to ESPN and media reports. The injury is not considered serious, the source said. If he needs back surgery, it would be performed during the time frame he would be sidelined after his forearm surgery, which he was to undergo Monday, according to a Boston Herald report.

Gronkowski will see noted spine specialist Robert Watkins in the near future following his surgery on his forearm. That surgery if all goes well will take about 10 weeks for Gronkowski to recover from.
